Artist’s Statement

I am a painter inspired by the environments around me. The observation of the landscape, seascape and the sunset has been a daily practice of awareness for me for as long as I can remember.

Many of my images that I translate to canvas or other substrate are based on these experiences with what I consider the sublime. In addition, through traveling quite extensively, I have found there are a series of exclusive characteristics in each location, which for me as a painter is exhilarating. To smell the air, feel the humidity, to see the color difference of palette, the seasonal change, the time of day, the altitude, all of these things factor in for me when I am creating a painting. Most of my work is based in oil, but I also like to experiment with combinations of iridescent and acrylic inks, and cold wax. I find each medium has its own particular qualities which offer completely different sensibilities. My process is often to build layer upon layer of transparent or semi transparent glazes which can add to the depth and clarity of the painting. Not only content on conveying a sense of place to the viewer, but I am creating what I hope, is an attempt to connect one with the beauty of the everyday. To experience the quiet, and to evoke healing. I am very concerned with our environment, but more specifically with our relationship with the environment. If there is a sense of awe noted by viewer, a desire to be a witness to natural phenomena, a moment for a pause, then I have done my job as an artist who loves this earth so much.
